Miss Mikayla Higgins is the Director of Early Childhood Education at Trinity Lutheran School. A graduate of Concordia University, Nebraska, Miss Higgins has served in a variety of positions within the Early Childhood program since 2014, prior to becoming the program director.
I chose Trinity, but Trinity also chose me. When I was first hired, I didn’t believe that education would be a long term job for me,” she said. “It’s funny how God’s plan is always above ours! When I began at Trinity, I realized that it is much more than a school. It is a family and a ministry that I wanted to be a part of.”
As the Director, Miss Mikayla oversees Trinity’s four early childhood classes – the Bumblebee class for younger toddlers, the Butterfly class for older toddlers, preschool, and pre-kindergarten – along with the before and after-school childcare program as well as Trinity’s Summer Camp program.
“Our goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn and grow alongside each other. Providing unique and alternative learning experiences for each of our children is of utmost importance to me,” she said. “We provide childcare, but we also provide valuable learning opportunities that support physical, social/emotional and intellectual learning.”
Miss Mikayla has been instrumental in ensuring Trinity Lutheran School's Early Childhood Education program continues to grow and improve. The program is licensed by the State of Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and is accredited through the National Lutheran School Accreditation Commission. The program went through the process of renewal of accreditation during the 2022-2023 school year, with accreditation lasting for five years. Additionally, the Trinity ECE program is enrolled in the State of Nebraska's Step Up to Quality program, which guides early child care providers in recognizing and improving quality. Due to the Step Up to Quality level that the Trinity ECE program has attained, the program is eligible to partner with Lincoln Littles, a non-profit program dedicated to promoting quality child care options and offering subsidies to qualifying families.
When not at Trinity, Miss Mikayla enjoys spending time with her family and two cats. “I became an aunt in 2023 and it may be my favorite role yet,” she said. An active-lifestyle enthusiast, Miss Mikayla has coached high school volleyball at Lincoln Lutheran since 2019. She also enjoys playing volleyball and weight lifting.
