November Outreach of the Month: Por Nosotros

Learn

Pero Dios demuestra su amor por nosotros en esto: en que cuando todavía éramos pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros.”

Does anything look familiar in the sentence above? Unless you speak Spanish, you might be saying, “None of it looks familiar to me!” What if it were in English, would that help? Let’s give it a try: “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners Christ Jesus died for us.”

“Por nosotros” means “for us” and is the focus of our ESL classes at Trinity. They are a reminder that Jesus is for us… all of us. ESL classes, or Por Nosotros, are not only about the students, but also about those who serve our students and how Trinity is reaching out in loving service.

Por Nosotros began at Trinity in the fall of 2019.  The classes were originally under the leadership of Pastor Santi and began in 2017 at several different locations, including Immanuel Lutheran Church, before landing at Trinity. Although Pastor Santi took a call to serve in Kansas and COVID shut down and much reduced student numbers, the classes continue to be a means for building relationships and sharing God’s love with our community.

The addition of two teachers fluent in Spanish in fall 2021 greatly added to this relationship building, and many of our students from 2021-2022 continue in classes for 2022-2023. Most of our students are native Spanish speakers although we do have a few who speak Portuguese, and Pastor Wing has developed a special relationship with a Muslim student who he continues to meet with not just for English classes, but also to walk through the Bible and the Quran together.

This fall we have three classes: Intro, Level I, and Level II. We have a wonderful group of teachers and conversation partners who faithfully work with our students. While many of our previous students registered for classes this fall, work schedules and sickness have led to lower-than-normal class numbers. However, we know even when only one student shows up, God’s love is still being demonstrated and shared through our words and actions.

Pray

  • For our students, many who have children and work long hours to support their families
  • For our teachers and Conversation Partners as they share God’s love with our students
  • For God’s guidance as we look to the future of Por Nosotros and how we can best serve non-English speakers in our community

Give

ESL Classes continue to be covered by a grant from the Nebraska District, Thrivent cards, and minimal class cost to students. Please continue to support our ESL classes through your prayers, and we encourage you to attend the Bi-lingual Thanksgiving Service on Thursday, November 17th, at 6:30PM.

Serve

We would love volunteers to help prepare and serve food for the Bilingual Service and Dinner! If you would like to help in any way, please contact Bethany at bmrosko@trinityoflincoln.org or 402-474-0606.
