October Outreach of the Month: Common Threads

Learn
Common Threads is a volunteer team of people who use their generous hearts and hands to construct a wide variety of basic human care items. A non-profit operating as an auxiliary of Messiah Lutheran Church, Common Threads creates products such as washable, reusable feminine care kits that help girls and young women go to school during their menses; newborn care kits for mothers who lack basic infant and postpartum feminine needs; and bedding for the homeless, nursing homes and international orphanages. Numerous organizations, including Orphan Grain Train, People’s City Mission, Barnabas Community, Lincoln Community Action, Foster Care Closet, Pregnancy Center, Friendship Home, Pine Ridge Reservation, Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Missions, and Clinic with a Heart, to name just a few, receive and distribute our products to individuals in need locally and internationally. In 2021, our products blessed the lives of 3,497 individuals and 236 volunteers.

Since our inception in 2018 our group has grown from 3 to over 325 active participants. Volunteers are invited to attend studio hours at our dedicated studio at Messiah Lutheran Church. Newcomers arrive each week to become involved as they hear about the project and are invited to join by friends and family.

An important aspect of our organization is the dual benefit conferred to both the participants in the group as well as to the recipients of the products. The people who participate in Common Threads are simultaneously served as they experience a vital sense of purpose and fulfillment through the creation of meaningful human care items. Men and women on our team, ages 5 to 85, include students seeking service projects, widows yearning to fill their time, retirees, retirement center residents and home-bound community members.

You, too, are invited to join us in our studio where together we create and serve to meet the basic human care needs of God’s people throughout the world.
